President submits bill on ratification of Istanbul Convention to parliament
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the law "On International Treaties of Ukraine," has introduced to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law "On ratification of the European Council’s Convention on the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence and the fight against these phenomena" (Istanbul Convention), the press service of the Presidential Administration has said.
"The bill provides for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the introduction of the use of Ukrainian legislation with international standards to prevent and counter violence against women and domestic violence," the message says on the website of the president.
The message says that the implementation of the provisions of the Convention will address gender discrimination, eliminate legal grounds for discrimination, provide additional guarantees of equality of women and men and will improve civil and legal protection mechanisms for victims of violence.
