Poroshenko urging UN Secretary General to appoint rapporteur to probe torture of Ukrainians forcibly held in Russia
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Washington has called on the UN to appoint a rapporteur to investigate the facts of torture of citizens of Ukraine who are forcibly held in Russia.
During their meeting in the U.S., Ban and Poroshenko discussed the issues of engaging more instruments and institutions of the UN system to stop the Russian aggression, in particular the deployment of the international security mission in Donbas, the Ukrainian president's press service reported on Friday.
"The Ukrainian president also urged to appoint a U.N. rapporteur to investigate the facts of torture of citizens of Ukraine forcibly held in Russia," the report says.
Poroshenko also supported the new UN plan for humanitarian response in Ukraine in 2016, which envisages the provision of assistance to Ukrainian citizens who were affected most as the result of the Russian aggression.
