EC welcomes establishment of anti-corruption prosecutor's office in Ukraine as important element on path to visa-free regime

The formation of the Prosecutor's Office in Ukraine, which is specifically designed for the fight against corruption is a key aspect in the preparation of Kyiv for a visa-free regime with the EU, European Commission's spokesman Margaritis Schinas said at a briefing in Brussels on Thursday.

He said that Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko met earlier this week in Paris with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and told the latter about the appointment of the prosecutor in charge of the fight against corruption. Jean-Claude Juncker welcomed this development, the spokesman said.

The appointment of a special prosecutor is an important aspect in the creation of structures to combat corruption in Ukraine. The European Commission hopes that the specialized prosecutor's office under the chairmanship of Nazar Kholodnytsky will starts to work very soon and will work closely with the Anti-Corruption Bureau, which will lead to tangible results in the fight against corruption in Ukraine, Schinas said.
