Rada representative in Constitutional Court defends legality of officials' lustration
The law on government purification does not violate human rights and freedoms, says Anatoliy Selivanov, Verkhovna Rada's Permanent Representative to the Ukrainian Constitutional Court.
"This law neither violates the constitutional values, nor restricts human rights and freedoms," he said at a Constitutional Court hearing of the legality of lustration on Friday.
He invoked the Ukrainian laws, international law and a conclusion made by the Venice Commission.
He said the document he is submitting with the Constitutional Court analyzes the Venice Commission's conclusions and offers an "outline of the necessary changes" to the government purification law.
The Venice Commission pointed to the need for changes in the lustration law but made no mention of unconstitutionality, Selivanov added.
The nature of lustration is the responsibility as such of judges and officials, he said, responding to questions from attendees of the plenary session.
