Russia fears a united and democratic Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said.
"I see that Russia isn't so worried about Ukraine's membership of NATO or the EU since many people in Moscow just don't believe that [it will happen.] The main problem for Russia is Ukraine as a united and democratic state," he said while delivering a speech at the Annual Meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference in Kyiv on Friday.
Klimkin said the idea that Ukraine might live and maintain itself as a state completely opposite to Russia is a terrifying prospect for the country.
"For me it is quite clear that there are such reasons, but not because of the mythical fears, which now are brought in Russia, when attempting to find some explanation and to build Russia around the myths," Klimkin said.
