Nagant gun manufactured in 1933 found in PGO waiting room – deputy prosecutor

The Interior Ministry of Ukraine has opened a criminal proceeding after a weapon was discovered in a waiting room at the Prosecutor General's Office.

"Yesterday, the State Security Administration discovered a weapon at the PGO waiting room for citizens during the search. This weapon has been revealed in a specially fit place, namely at the waiting room for the citizens," deputy prosecutor general Oleh Zalisko told journalists at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He said that the gun was discovered in the early morning of July 21. As a result, Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin said that his life is in danger.

"This is a Nagant [gun] of 1933 year of production," he said.

Zalisko said that employees of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry have begun a procedural inquiry over this case and that the Nagant has been sent for an examination to "establish the fact of the possible firing of shots".

As reported, on July 21 Shokin said he had every reason to believe that he could be assassinated.

"I have well-substantiated grounds [which prove] that all sorts of provocations are being plotted against me, including my health … I have well-substantiated reasons to believe that someone wants to physically eliminate me," Shokin said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He also said that he has every reason to think that "various types of provocations are being carried against him."

"Unfortunately, due to my work to combat corruption in all fields without exception, I [have been] hampering many from illegally extracting amber, sand, [and I have] prevented other illegal bargains. That's why I have every reason to believe that someone wants to eliminate me. Unfortunately, this is the truth," he said.

Shokin added that he has already informed the president and Security Service of Ukraine about his concerns.
