New law on prosecutor's office will now enter into force on July 15, 2015
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has decided to postpone the entry into force of a new law on the prosecutor's office until July 15 of this year.
A total of 249 lawmakers voted for this decision.
One of the authors of the bill, Petro Poroshenko Bloc leader Yuriy Lutsenko, said at an evening plenary session that if the law on the prosecutor's office takes immediate effect "legal chaos will ensue."
"Under the new law, starting from April 26, the Prosecutor General Office will include not district prosecutor's offices, but local prosecutor's offices, which will be elected under a complicated procedure through a conference. Everyone understands that it cannot be done by April 26," Lutsenko said.
He said that the previous law on the prosecutor's office will be in effect until the end of the current parliamentary session.
As reported, the law on the prosecutor's office was passed by the Ukrainian parliament on October 14, 2014, and was due to take effect on April 26, 2015.
