Poland to build six observation towers on border with Russia
Poland plans to build observation towers on the 200-kilometer stretch of the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region.
Six observation towers, 35 to 50 meters high, will be set up. Images taken from the towers will be transmitted to border control checkpoints round-the-clock, Polish Radio reported on Monday.
A spokesman for the Polish Border Service said that the observation towers would be commissioned in June 2015 and that 75% of the work to strengthen the border had been financed by the European Union's External Borders Fund.
Poland's border with Russia marks the EU's external frontier, Polish Radio said.
There are four automobile checkpoints on the border between Poland and the Russian enclave. They handled 3.2 million Poles and 3.3 million Russians in 2014, and 2.9 million Poles and 3.2 million Russians in 2013.
