EU advisors hopes to help Ukraine fight corruption

The EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine) should be a driver of reforms on the country, EU Civilian Operations Commander and Director of the EU Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability Kenneth Deane has said.

"The reform program would focus on strategic issues," he told reporters in Brussels before his visit to Kyiv scheduled for March 18-20.

He said that the main task of the mission is provision of best practices and advises to implement reforms in Ukraine, first of all, in the security area, including the National Guard of Ukraine and the Border Service.

Deane said that one of the directions to work with is fighting corruption.

"Corruption for us is any steps minimizing rule of law in Ukraine," the European diplomat said.

He said that the Ukrainian government itself should settle the issues of the relations with oligarchs.

The EUAM Ukraine was deployed in Ukraine on December 1, 2014. The mission consists of 170 members, including 100 foreign advisors and 70 Ukrainians.
