Latvia to invite Lukashenko to Eastern Partnership summit
Latvia, which is presiding in the European Union this year, is ready to invite Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to the Eastern Partnership summit.
"We know that Lukashenko did not represent Belarus at previous summits. We are ready to invite the Belarusian president," the Latvian Foreign Ministry's State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics told a press conference in Minsk on Friday.
At the same time, he said that the level of representation at the Riga summit will depend on Belarus. "The final decision about the level of Belarusian presence at the Riga summit will be made by Belarus. We want to see countermovement on the part of Minsk, and we will be inviting Belarus to all events," the diplomat added.
The Eastern Partnership summit is due to be held in Riga this May.
Eastern Partnership is a project created by the European Union. Its main goal is to bring the EU closer to six nations: Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Belarus.
