EU not to recognize elections organized by DPR and LPR
The European Union will not recognize the so-called elections organized by the authorities of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) and wants to ensure access to the crash site of the Malaysian airliner in eastern Ukraine, according to the conclusions adopted at a summit of the leaders of EU member states on Friday.
"[The EU] considers that the holding of 'presidential' and 'parliamentary' elections, called by the self-appointed authorities, would run counter to the letter and the spirit of the Minsk Protocol and will not be recognized. The European Council reiterates its call for immediate, safe and unrestricted access to the MH17 crash site," reads the document.
The European Council also "welcomed progress in the resolution of the Ukrainian energy crisis." The leaders of EU member states look forward to the finalization of ongoing trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission.
The self-appointed DPR and LPR authorities are planning to hold "presidential" and "parliamentary" elections on November 2.
