Over 20,000 Hasidics arrive in Uman to celebrate New Year
Over 20,000 Hasidic pilgrims have arrived in the village of Uman in Ukraine's Cherkasy region to celebrate the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), a regional police spokesperson told Interfax on Wednesday.
"Some 20,100 people had arrived by 1100 this morning. Everything is taking place traditionally, in a quiet atmosphere," the regional police said.
No reports have yet been registered about public order violations, the police said.
This year the 5775th Rosh Hashanah will be celebrated from the evening of September 24 and until the evening of September 26.
The police said earlier they expected around 20,000 pilgrims to arrive from more than 20 countries (mainly from Israel and the United States). According to the State Service for Emergencies, there would be between 25,000 and 36,000 Hasidic Jews.
Public order during the festivities will be provided by 421 Ukrainian police officers, 12 policemen from Israel and 57 personnel from the Ukrainian State Traffic Inspectorate.
