EU may consider lifting sanctions against Russia in late September if truce in Ukraine is observed, says Van Rompuy
The EU's additional sanctions against Russia may be revised or lifted by the end of September under certain conditions, Head of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has said.
"At the same time, it is my understanding that the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) before the end of the month will carry out a comprehensive review of the implementation of the peace plan [in Ukraine] on the basis of an assessment carried out by the European External Action Service (EEAS)," Van Rompuy said in a statement posted on the official Web site.
He said that the EU stressed "the reversibility and scalability" of their restrictive measures.
Therefore, if the situation changes, "the Commission and the EEAS are invited to put forward proposals to amend, suspend or repeal the set of sanctions in force, in all or in part," the European Council head said.
