Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has invited German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit Ukraine this week to discuss issues of common interest.
"During the meeting the sides discussed international efforts for a peaceful settlement of the situation in the Donbas… Poroshenko invited Merkel to visit Ukraine next week for a substantive discussion of issues of common interest," the press-service of the Ukrainian president reported on August 16.
Poroshenko thanked Merkel for Germany's support for Ukraine and expressed hope that EU leaders would pay due attention to the Ukrainian issue during the next meeting of the European Council on August 30.
"Poroshenko also expressed his readiness to attend this meeting to brief the EU leaders on the situation in Ukraine, as it happened at a European Council meeting on June 27," reads the report.
