Rada passes bill on government lustration in first reading
The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday adopted a bill on government lustration at first reading.
The bill lays down legal framework and the procedure of lustration of the government with the aim of establishing the rule of law and improving the efficiency of the fight against corruption.
According to the Web site of the Verkhovna Rada, the objective of the bill is to restore confidence in government and create conditions for the construction of a new system of government in keeping with European standards.
The bill suggests the procedures for conducting checks of government officials and people nominated for government position with the purpose of deciding weather they meet certain criteria for occupying relevant post.
A total of 252 out of the 299 registered MPs voted for the bill at first reading.
