Over 117,000 are IDPs in Ukraine, 168,000 crossed into Russia - UN Refugee Agency
Over 6,000 people were forced to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine in the past week, the UN Refugee Agency has reported.
"Amid a worsening situation in eastern Ukraine, the UN refugee agency on Tuesday estimated that more than 117,000 people are now displaced inside Ukraine. In the past seven days more than 6,200 people have been forced from their homes. As of August 1, an estimated 168,000 people have crossed into Russia," the agency said in a press release on Tuesday.
At the same time, the number of people displaced from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions had risen sharply from 2,600 in early June to 102,600 at the start of this month. People from eastern Ukraine now make up 87% of the total displaced population in Ukraine, and those from Crimea number some 15,200 people.
