Poroshenko sees need for some changes in anti-terrorist operation tactics

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that it is necessary to make changes to the tactics of the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine.

He said at a meeting with security officials on Monday that it was necessary "to make some changes to tactics, which would help narrow the zone of the anti-terrorist operations, strengthen the protection of the borders and do everything possible to ensure the protection of civilians," the presidential press service reported.

Poroshenko also announced the holding of a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.

According to the report, the president noted that the active phase of the anti-terrorist operation was continuing.

Poroshenko also ordered Director General of the Ukroboronprom State Concern Roman Romanov to improve the effectiveness of hostilities and improve the provision of servicemen in the ATO zone with weapons within a week.

He also drew the attention of Chief of the General Staff Viktor Muzhenko and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov that settlements that are freed from militants should immediately get public authorities that will be able to take care of the population, rebuild infrastructure, establish a peaceful life, and ensure the payment of social benefits.

"The main thing people need now is safety," he said, adding that the local population in the liberated settlements helps Ukrainian military.

Poroshenko said that servicemen were responsible for the restoration of peaceful living in the liberated towns.

"If you've assumed power, it's important not only to raise the flag, but also to protect the flag, the state, and the people," he said.
