Kyiv: Ukrainian accession to NATO is not on current agenda, it may divide public
It is not the right time to speak about a change in the non-aligned status of Ukraine, Presidential Administration deputy head Valeriy Chaly said.
"In my opinion, the non-allied status we have now is a bad model (…). We have seen that the Budapest Memorandum is not working, we have no collective security system or new mechanisms and we are operating in a vacuum," Chaly said in a program aired by the television channel ICTV on Monday night.
At the same time, the deputy head of the Presidential Administration opined that Ukraine's accession to NATO was not on the current agenda.
"We so far cannot speak about factors which divide the public. The accession to NATO is still a dividing factor," Chaly said.
He said the issue should be put on the agenda after the domestic problems were resolved, the public sentiment altered and relevant public support was gained.
"The present-day interaction with this mightiest organization which provides the security in Europe is sufficient for our advancement in the direction chosen by our fundamental documents," he said.
