Kharkiv Mayor Hennadiy Kernes, who is being treated in an Israeli hospital after a serious injury, has had spine surgery, the Kharkiv city council press office said in a statement citing Deputy Mayor Svetlana Horbunova-Ruban.
"The surgery was very long, which is typical of surgery on this body part. Doctors are content with the result. Kernes' state is stable despite being serious," the document said.
Kernes is still on an artificial respirator and he is to have rehabilitation, the statement said.
Kernes had surgery in Israel overnight into Wednesday, Kharkiv city council information and PR department director Yuriy Sydorenko has said. "Another operation ended at 2 a.m. It lasted either eight or nine hours. I just know that doctors are very content with the results," Sydorenko posted on Facebook.
It has been reported that Kernes was wounded during a jog on Belgorod highway in Kharkiv on April 28.
