New "people's mayor" elected in Mariupol

Representatives of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic have held a session in Mariupol, where they elected Vyacheslav Kuklin to the post of acting mayor of the city.

Kuklin will fulfill the duties of the city's mayor until the city's "people's mayor Dmytro Kuzmenko is released from custody," the Internet publication Novosti Donbassa reported on Monday.

The people who have taken over the Mariupol City Council have announced the dissolution of the city's parliament and said the executive committee of the city council should continue functioning, the publication reported. New deputies were elected from the protesters.

"The names of the new deputies of the city council are currently unknown to the general public. There are currently 20-30 of them," Novosti Donbassa reported.

On March 20, Kuzmenko was detained for blocking military units in Mariupol. However, no arrest was then made. He was detained by Ukrainian Security Service officials in April, the local media reported.
