International community must begin serious dialogue to solve Ukrainian crisis – OSCE Chairperson-in-Office

Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter, has urged the parties in the conflict in Ukraine to step back from confrontation and called for the international community to conduct a serious dialogue to settle the situation in the country.

During a press conference in Kyiv on Monday, he urged all the parties to set confrontation aside and said that the OSCE could offer all the necessary mechanisms to deescalate the crisis. Burkhalter said they required that a dialogue start within Ukraine, but he also called for all the major parties to begin a very serious dialogue as well - he drew attention to the United States and EU in particular - before the meeting in Geneva.

He noted that a four-party meeting scheduled for April 17 is being prepared in Geneva.

He said that they were happy to host such a meeting at any moment and they would watch how the events unfold in the future.

According to him, discussion on Ukraine is very important. He supported the idea that the international community could coordinate their various views within an international contact group.
