Another powerful quake strikes off Chile coast

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile, the Geophysics Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Siberian branch reported on Friday.

According to the service's Altai and Sayany department, the latest aftershock struck 55 kilometers southwest of the Chilean city of Iquique at 5:37 a.m. Moscow time on Friday. Its epicenter was located at a depth of ten kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, -20.56 degrees southern latitude and -70.54 degrees western longitude.

Specialists have described this earthquake as "devastating", it said.

Several powerful aftershocks, which triggered a tsunami, were registered following the initial earthquake, but their epicenters were located farther from the coast.

An 8.2-magnitude earthquake rumbled offshore in Chile early on Wednesday morning, prompting a tsunami. The first tsunami wave, two meters high, crashed ashore in Chile shortly afterwards, causing serious destruction in the country.

Six people died and up to one million residents were evacuated from Chile's coastal districts.
