Akhmetov calls on Russia to resolve everything peacefully
Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov has said that he is categorically against Ukraine's breakup and called on Russia to resolve the existing conflict through diplomatic channels.
"Ukraine is going through a difficult time, and I am sure that Ukraine will become stronger after going through this difficult situation. I have always wanted Ukraine to be independent, unified and strong," he said in an interview with Britain's ITV television company in Donetsk on Thursday.
He said that pro-Russian sentiments in some regions did not give reason to talk about a split in the country.
"The east of Ukraine is part of Ukraine, too. This is an industrial region whose residents want to live with dignity as every Ukrainian. Everything must be resolved by peaceful, diplomatic means. Russia is our friend, our strategic partner," Akhmetov said.
However, he said that Russia should show more respect for Ukraine's sovereignty.
"We respect Russia, the brotherly Russian people. But it should be a two-way street. We deserve respect in return," Akhmetov said.
