UK minister: Issue of Tymoshenko's imprisonment very important to some EU countries
UK Minister of State for Europe David Lidington has said he believes that the release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko would have a positive impact on the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
"I have no doubt that the release of Yulia Tymoshenko from prison would really help. As for Britain, we have never highlighted any particular high-profile cases. Our position is that these cases demonstrate that there is a very serious problem – selective justice," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
He noted that the current situation demonstrates systemic problems that exist in Ukraine.
"It's necessary to carry out systemic reforms that will make it impossible to apply selective justice. But the truth is that the problem of Mrs. Tymoshenko is very important to some countries, political parties, and members of the European Parliament," Lidington concluded.
