Foreign minister: Ukraine wants to be non-permanent UN Security Council member in 2016-2017
Ukraine is planning to get the seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2016-2017, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara has said.
"One of our priorities is receiving the seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2016-2017," he said at a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Ukraine from African, Latin American and Middle East countries in Kyiv on Tuesday.
In this regard, Kozhara said, Kyiv counts on support from the countries that are represented by respective ambassadors.
Kozhara noted that Ukraine had already been three times in the composition of the UN Security Council and has a long experience in this honorable mission.
He also recalled that the Ukrainian state had been an active contributor of military and police personnel to UN operations to maintain peace and security, particularly in Africa.
"Promoting peace on the African continent will be one of Ukraine's main priorities if our state is elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council," Kozhara said.
