Opposition wants prosecutor general to report to parliament
The parliamentary opposition has demanded that Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka be invited to the Verkhovna Rada to report on the situation with the observance of the law in Ukraine.
"I'm appealing to you, as parliament chairman, to contact the prosecutor general of Ukraine, and parliament should invite the prosecutor general... and ask him to report on what is happening in Ukraine. He should report not only on the events on May 18 concerning the beating of journalists, but in general on what is happening in Ukraine," Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk said at a meeting of the parliament's conciliatory council on Monday, while addressing Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak.
Yatseniuk said that MPs want to hear Pshonka report on what is happening in the country's judicial system, law enforcement system, and how the Ukrainian government works.
"We want the prosecutor general to inform the parliament about how prosecutors are fighting for legality and order in Ukraine," he said.
Yatseniuk also said that the opposition wants the prosecutor general to come to the Verkhovna Rada and report on "how the Prosecutor General's Office is fighting lawlessness and banditry in Ukraine."
