ECHR's Tymoshenko ruling should make Ukrainian govt think about further steps - lawyer

Today's judgment issued by the European Court of Human Rights in response to a complaint from former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was to be expected, Tymoshenko's representative at the ECHR Valentyna Telychenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.

"This decision was to be expected. Certainly, the Ukrainian government will now have to think what measures it should take to stop political pressure on courts and clean up its reputation," she said.

The ECHR ruled earlier that the jailing of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko as part of the gas case against her was politically motivated and her rights were violated.

The ECHR announced its decision on Tuesday.

The court unanimously agreed that a violation of Part 1 of Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights had been committed, ECHR said in its resolution.

The court also established violations of Part 4 of Article 5 of the convention, Part 5 of Article 5 and Article 18 of the convention, it said.
