Ukrainian speaker proposes drawing up visa-free Europe charter
Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak has invited the parliaments of European countries to draw up a charter of a visa-free Europe aimed at lifting any restrictions for citizens of European countries in moving around the continent.
"Free movement of our citizens without visas and other restrictions, which is the main privilege for Europeans, still remains unrealized. The problem of visas remains the biggest obstacle to removing the dividing lines in Europe," Rybak said at an inter-parliamentary conference in St. Petersburg on Friday.
"To this end, we propose considering the possibility of drawing up a charter of a visa-free Europe by PACE, the [CIS] Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the national parliaments," he said.
Rybak pointed out that Ukraine unilaterally abolished visas for citizens of the European Union member-states several years ago, and a positive effect from this decision was noticeable during the UEFA Euro 2012.
"We highly value reciprocal steps by our closest neighbors, but these measures are insufficient, and the issue should be resolved comprehensively within the entire Europe," Rybak said.
