Parliament to hold hearings in April on addressing consequences of Chornobyl disaster

Parliamentary hearings on the state, measures and prospects for overcoming the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster will be held in the Verkhovna Rada on April 17, 2013.

A total of 323 MPs out of the 395 registered in the parliament's session hall on Tuesday voted for a resolution on the holding of the hearings.

"Their goal [of these hearings] is analyzing the decisions of the Verkhovna Rada and providing concrete recommendations to the Ukrainian government on the comprehensive settlement of problems," the head of the committee on environmental policy and tackling the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster, said Svoboda faction deputy Iryna Sekh.

She said that a new policy to overcome the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster should be formed in Ukraine.

MPs also supported the holding of parliamentary hearings on the state of human rights observance in Ukraine on June 12 and on the state of the implementation of court decisions in Ukraine on May 22. A total of 333 and 287 MPs voted for these resolutions respectively, with the required number of 226.

The Verkhovna Rada will also hold hearings on April 3 regarding the recovery and recreation for children and young people. A total of 314 MPs out of the 398 registered in the session hall voted for such a decision.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that MPs on Tuesday did not support the proposals to hold parliamentary hearings on the environmental problems of shale gas production in Ukraine, the introduction of digital broadcasting standards in Ukraine and "The Ukrainian Book: Current Realities and Prospects for the Development of Domestic Book Publishing and Distribution."
