Lutsenko to be released by May, says Katerynchuk

Batkivschyna parliamentary faction MP Mykola Katerynchuk has said he thinks that jailed former Interior Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko will be released from prison by May, as the EU demanded this from Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

"I'm sure that Lutsenko will be released by May. There will be some positive changes, positive dynamics as diplomats say, in the case of the [former Ukrainian Prime Minister] Yulia Tymoshenko," he said during a roundtable discussion in Kyiv on Thursday.

Katerynchuk added that the hearing of the European Court of Human Rights scheduled for March 2013 could lay the grounds for progress in the case of Tymoshenko.

The politician also praised the recent EU-Ukraine Summit in Brussels.

"I think the EU is set to be patient, as it realizes that it's dealing not just with one person [Ukrainian President Viktor] Yanukovych, but with a population of 46 million people," Katerynchuk said.

He added that he objects to radical statements about isolation of the Ukrainian authorities, as it may push Ukraine towards Russia.
