ECHR obliges Ukraine to pay about EUR 500,000 under five lawsuits
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday obliged Ukraine to pay EUR 500,000 under five lawsuits, the ECHR has reported.
One case concerned the treatment of a group of detainees during and after a search and security operation conducted in January 2007 in Izyaslav Prison. In particular, Ukraine is to pay EUR 25,000 to each of the 17 applicants with respect to non-pecuniary damage and EUR 10,000 to one of the applicants with respect to costs and expenses.
The next decision concerns Polish citizen Dariusz Chabrowski who complained of the lengthy failure of the Ukrainian authorities to enforce a judicial decision on returning his abducted child to Poland. The ECHR obliged Ukraine to pay him EUR 7,500 as non-pecuniary damage and EUR 3,285 as costs and expenses.
Another plaintiff, Ukrainian citizen Yuriy Slusar, lodged a lawsuit with the ECHR regarding the Ukrainian authorities' failure to effectively investigate the disappearance and possible murder of his twin brother in April 2003. The court found that the plaintiff was right and obliged the Ukrainian authorities to pay EUR 12,000 as compensation and EUR 500 as costs and expenses.
In another case considered by the court, Ukrainian Kostiantyn Sizarev complained about the conditions of detention while at the Yevpatoriya Temporary Detention Facility and alleged that the authorities had been responsible for his having been beaten up by a cellmate and for the lack of an effective investigation into the incident. He will receive EUR 9,000 as non-pecuniary damage.
The ECHR also awarded EUR 20,000 in compensation to Ukrainian citizen Tetiana Mosendz who complained about the improper investigation into the death of her son, who died while serving in the army.
All of these individual lawsuits were mainly sent against the Ukrainian judicial system, the ECHR said.
