European Parliament hopes Ukraine will form effective parliament with current opposition
MEP Pawel Zalewski (Poland) has said that the formation in Ukraine of an effective parliament with the current opposition is important to future relations with the European Union.
"It's important what consequences the results of these elections will have for future relations between Ukraine and the EU... The elections are over, and then there's the question of creating a new parliament with the current opposition," he said at a roundtable meeting, entitled "Elections 2012. Future Prospects of Relations between Ukraine and the EU," which was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Zalewski said the EU was closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine after the elections, waiting for the new parliament to start working.
"We're monitoring the process of the creation of a new parliament and are waiting for the first meeting will take place. We hope that in terms of status, the opposition will get its powers," the MEP said.
He also added that according to international observers, there were a lot of irregularities in the parliamentary elections in Ukraine. But, on the other hand, Zalewski said, the results of exit polls, which were held on the polling day, are not much different from the actual election results.
"Therefore, we can say that these elections did not meet standards, but reflected the opinions of Ukrainians. And the EU has to understand this and take this into account in our future relations," he added.
