Israel thinks the military operation against terrorists in the Gaza Strip may drag on for some time if Palestinian shelling of Israeli territory is not stopped.
"We must do all we can to guarantee that our children go to school and sleep peacefully," the Israeli prime minister's advisor for the Russian media Alex Selsky told Interfax.
"When they stop shooting we will stop attacking," he said.
Asked why Israel lays the main blame for the missile strikes on the Palestinian movement Hamas, when other extremists organization are also active in the Gaza Strip, Selsky said "Hamas has proclaimed itself the legitimate government in Gaza."
"Once it has proclaimed itself the government that controls Gaza, it must control all," he added.
"Israel is a law-based state. If anyone in Israel starts shelling foreign citizens uncontrollably, we will arrest and jail him. Why don't they do the same?" Selsky said.
