Ukraine will get cheaper Russian gas if it joins Customs Union - ministry

Ukraine will see a reduction in the price it pays for Russian gas if it joins the Customs Union, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's First Department of CIS Countries Mikhail Yevdokimov said at a Friday briefing in Moscow.

"This is nothing new. Export duties have been cancelled within the Customs Union. Accordingly, the gas price will be lower," he said.

Yevdokimov added that if Ukraine joins the Customs Union there would be no special discount for gas.

"This would be the objective indication of Customs Union membership," he said.

Yevdokimov said that the terms and requirements are the same for all economic operators in the Customs Union.

"In the Customs Union, it is impossible for one enterprise to buy gas at one price and another company to buy at a different price," the diplomat said.

The diplomat declined to provide a definite figure when asked about the real gas price that would be presented to Ukraine if it joins the Customs Union.

"Ukrainian enterprises will pay what Russian enterprises pay," he said.
