Klitschko: Mayoral elections in Kyiv not to be held soon due to high support of oppositional forces in capital

Leader of the UDAR Party Vitali Klitschko has said that mayoral election in Kyiv could be postponed because of the active support for opposition political forces in the capital.

"Considering the fact that the opposition has the highest support in Kyiv, I don't rule out that the authorities will take any steps to prevent the [mayoral] election [in Kyiv]," he said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Friday, when asked whether the authorities could postpone the mayoral election in the capital of Ukraine.

Earlier, Klitschko said that UDAR's faction in a new Verkhovna Rada would initiate holding local elections in Kyiv on May 2013.

As reported, in November 2010 Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych dismissed Leonid Chernovetsky from the position of the head of Kyiv City State Administration, and replaced him with Oleksandr Popov. At the same time, Chernovetsky remained the capital's mayor.

On June 1, 2012 Chernovetsky resigned from the position of mayor.

Kyiv City Council appointed Secretary of Kyiv City Council Halyna Hereha as acting mayor.
