Defense Ministry: Nearly 19,000 draftees to join Ukrainian army this autumn
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has reported that 18,900 draftees will join the Ukrainian army during the conscription period in October-November 2012.
"Some 18,900 people will be drafted into military service this autumn. Of these, 12,500 will be conscripted to Ukraine's Armed Forces, 5,400 to the Internal Troops of the Interior Ministry, and 1,000 people to the State Special Transport Service," Deputy Chief of the Main Department on Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Ihor Mykolaenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Monday.
He said that this was 2,500 people less than the number of draftees who joined the Ukrainian army this spring.
He also said that there were enough draftees in Ukraine and that based on the low level of conscription, it can be argued that during the current and future conscription campaigns young men who express the desire to serve in the army would be the main ones to be conscripted.
