CPU criticizing Regions Party for inconsistency in language law implementation
The Regions Party has got mixed up in its own pre-election promises regarding the status of the Russian language, Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) MP Yevhen Tsarkov has said.
According to the party's press service, he said so while commenting on the bill on amendments to the law of Ukraine on the principles of the state language policy, which was recently submitted to the parliament by Regions Party members. The bill, in particular, proposes to assign Russian the status of a state language in the future.
"I think the Regions Party simply does not know what to do to please everyone in the process of sewing the country together and returning the citizens' trust, which it has lost due to anti-popular activities. First, they propose the language law that provides languages of the national minorities with a regional status, and they pretend to be fulfilling their pre-election promises. And then they send their own bill for an alleged revision and propose a third bill… And now they are talking about assigning Russian the status of a state language," Tsarkov said.
He added that Russian should be declared a state language to protect the language rights of Ukrainian citizens.
