According to Western officials, as of the middle of January, North Korean forces in Kursk region lost about 4,000 people killed and wounded, including about 1,000 killed, the BBC said on Wednesday.
BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner states this is a very high figure, given that about 11,000 troops were sent to help Russia in Kursk region, which Ukrainian forces entered in August last year.
Western officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC that about 1,000 troops were killed in the battle. Gardner said this is a very high level of losses, and it is unacceptable for the North Korean contingent without significant reinforcements.
According to the BBC, it is unclear where the wounded are being treated, and it is also unclear when and to what extent they will be replaced. In mid-January, South Korea's National Intelligence Service reported the deaths of more than 300 North Korean soldiers who fought for Russia. At least 2,700, according to their data, were wounded.
