Exhumation of Volyn tragedy victims to start in Ternopil region in April
In the former village of Puzhnyky (Ternopil region), exhumation of the remains of Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy will start in April 2025, the Polish radio station RMF FM said.
It is reported that the Polish foundation "Freedom and Democracy" has received permission from the Ukrainian authorities to extract the remains from the ground and conduct further research.
"First of all, we are talking about establishing the identities of the people whose remains, laid in layers, were found in a pit next to the former cemetery," Deputy Head of the foundation Maciej Dancewicz said.
He noted that after the excavations, the remains will be studied by Polish archaeologists and anthropologists.
"Specialists are already collecting genetic material from descendants. At the site where the remains are located, this material will also be collected in the same professional manner," Dancewicz said. After the research, it is planned to rebury the victims and perpetuate the memory of this place.
