Poroshenko Foundation suggests restoring Shukhevych Museum in Lviv at its own expense instead of crowdfunding
The Poroshenko Foundation has come up with a renewed initiative to finance the restoration of the museum of Ukrainian Insurgent Army Cornet General Roman Shukhevych in Lviv, destroyed by Russian Shaheds in early 2024, and suggests that not to raise funds among citizens for this, so as not to delay the start of restoration work.
"Exactly one year ago, Russian barbarians destroyed the museum of Ukrainian Insurgent Army Cornet General Roman Shukhevych in Lviv. Unfortunately, during this time, the restoration of the historical monument has not begun... Immediately after the barbaric enemy attack on the Shukhevych Museum, the Poroshenko Foundation offered financial assistance for the speedy restoration of the destroyed monument, and the corresponding letter of guarantee was handed over to the institution's management," a message posted on the Foundation's Facebook page on Thursday reads.
The message notes that the idea of restoring the house was supported at a public meeting at the historical museum in Lviv on January 17, 2024, in particular by Roman Shukhevych's daughter Maria Trylevska, Head of the OUN-UPA All-Ukrainian Brotherhood Bohdan Borovych, dissident and public figure Myroslav Marynovych, MPs, deputies of Lviv Regional and City Councils.
"However, contrary to the wishes of the Lviv community, the city government ignored the proposal of the Poroshenko Foundation to restore the Shukhevych Museum as soon as possible. But Lviv officials, in the face of the deteriorating economic situation and higher taxes, decided to organize a fundraiser from people. This is a deliberate delay in the process of restoring the museum complex," the message says.
The Foundation insists on the speedy restoration of the museum house in the form in which it had been before it was destroyed by the Shaheds. "We do not have the grave of Roman Shukhevych, therefore, for the family and for all Ukrainians, this place is the place of honoring the fallen general. The Museum building is the former underground headquarters of the OUN, where Shukhevych hid for the last years of his life and where he was killed by Soviet KGB in 1950. March 5, 2025, will mark the 75th anniversary of the heroic death of the legendary commander of the UPA. It would be very symbolic, fair and proper to honor Shukhevych's memory not in ruins, but in a rebuilt museum," the Poroshenko Foundation noted, adding that "for Ukraine, the memory of the leaders of the national liberation movement is no less a weapon than drones or shells."
"The Poroshenko Foundation urges: in the end, stop talking and delaying the restoration process, hiding behind paperwork, and start work on restoring the Shukhevych Museum," the message concludes.
The Foundation noted that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, they have been systematically helping the Defense Forces, providing them with FPV drones, Mavics, electronic warfare and other necessary equipment, and the total amount of assistance to brigades and battalions has already exceeded UAH 6.5 billion.
