Ukraine developing new missile Trembita able to reach Moscow
Ukrainian volunteer engineers are developing a new cruise missile called Trembita that can reach Moscow, the project is in the final stage of testing, and its serial production is planned to begin soon, The Economist reports.
"The basic Trembita flies at 400 km/h with a range of 200km. A larger and more powerful model is being developed to reach Moscow. Serial production is set to follow the final field tests. Getting this far has taken the enthusiasts just a year and a half—a feat in a field where getting from the drawing board to the battlefield usually takes many years," The Economist article, published on the website, states.
It is noted that the Trembita is equipped with a modernized pulse jet engine, which resembles the one used in the German V-1 bomb in 1944.
The main feature of the missile is its availability and mobility. The estimated cost of one projectile with a warhead weighing 20-30 kg is about $15,000, and the decoy version will cost only $3,000. These characteristics make the Trembita an effective tool for depleting enemy air defense.
The publication notes that in the context of uncertainty regarding foreign military aid to Ukraine, the Trembita project is part of a strategic initiative to revive the national defense industry.
At the same time, despite the prospects, Ukraine will need considerable time to establish mass production in volumes that could significantly change the balance of power. According to a high-ranking official in the security sector, this may take at least a year.
