New European Commissioner for Defense holds first conversation with Umerov
New European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius of Lithuania spoke about his first conversation in office with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
"My first teleconference call with Ukrainian Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov," Kubilius said on the X social network on Monday
He noted that it was "a good exchange on a way forward as regards the military assistance to Ukraine." Kubilius pointed out that "Ukraine's ability to defend itself is a major input in Europe's readiness for the most extreme military contingencies."
Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister, is known as an advocate of aid to Ukraine, and became the first separate European Commissioner for Defense. Previously, this area of responsibility was combined with the position of the EU's top diplomat.
It was previously reported that in his new position, Kubilius will work on developing the European Defence Union and increasing investment and industrial potential.
