Borrell: We are almost there to unblock European Peace Facility
European Union's High Representative Josep Borrell says the goal of unblocking the European Peace Facility for further military funding for Ukraine has almost been achieved.
"We need to finally find a consensus on my proposals to unblock the European Peace Facility's Ukraine Assistance Fund. We are almost there. We are almost there. I promise you that we will look for and find a way. I cannot say it is 100%, but almost," he said at a press conference in Luxembourg on Monday following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
He also said the mandate of the European Union's military assistance mission for Ukraine will be extended for the next two years. "I hope we will find a consensus to increase its mandate," he said.
Speaking about his plan to visit Ukraine before the end of his mandate, Borrell said "I also committed to Minister Sybiha that I would go to Ukraine before the end of my mandate, but I do not want to do it before having an agreement to deblock money from the European Peace Facility for Ukraine. Well, in fact, this is no longer for Ukraine. This is for the Member States that have already provided military support to Ukraine, and they are waiting," Borrell said.
