Romanian President: Zelenskyy's peace initiative is only approach to ensuring lasting just peace in Ukraine
Ukraine needs strong support of all UN member states determined to observe international law and the UN Charter, Romanian President Klaus Johannis has said at the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
"Look at the horrifying global consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine. It has unleashed the biggest security crisis in Europe in recent history, violating international law and causing repercussions that go far beyond Europe. In this context, Romania has provided strong, multidimensional support to Ukraine and its people, and we intend to support it for as long as it takes," he said.
Johannis also noted that Romania plays an important role in facilitating grain exports from Ukraine through ports on the Danube and Black Sea. He emphasized that "a prolonged conflict is unacceptable and we must stay the course."
"Ukraine needs strong support of all UN member states, determined to respect international law and the UN Charter. Romania fully supports President Zelenskyy's peace initiative. This is the only approach to ensure a just and lasting peace, fully in line with the UN Charter and international law," the president said.
