Coordinator of UN system Schmale condemns massive Russian strike on Ukraine
Coordinator of the UN system in Ukraine, humanitarian coordinator Matthias Schmale, condemned the massive missile strike that the Russian Federation launched on the territory of Ukraine on August 26.
“Like millions of people in Ukraine I spent hours in a shelter this morning because of the ongoing wave of attacks on Ukraine by the Russian Armed Forces,” he said Monday.
Schmale noted that the strikes resulted in the death and injury of civilians, as well as serious destruction of civilian infrastructure. “It is unacceptable that instead of getting on with their lives, the citizens of this country are having to seek safety in metro stations and other shelters.”
“Even in war there are rules. International humanitarian law must be respected. Civilians must be protected,” he stressed.
