Yanukovych, Platini open new terminal at Lviv airport

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and UEFA President Michel Platini have opened a new terminal at Lviv Airport named after Danylo Halytsky, which was constructed as a part of the preparations for the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.

"We are witnessing another victory, another holiday in Lviv – the opening of a modern terminal that can service more than 2,000 passengers per hour. The government will invest a total of UAH 3 billion in this project, and 90% of the sum has been invested in the last two years," Yanukovych said in Lviv on Thursday.

According to him, the central and local authorities are now to build modern infrastructure near the airport, as only 60% of communications are ready at the moment.

Yanukovych added that four up-to-date airports and a network of modern roads would be launched in Ukraine this year before Euro 2012.

"Intensive work is being carried out, I really hope that this holiday [Euro 2012] will be held properly and the Ukrainian team will play well. I hope we play the French team in the final," the head of state said.

In turn, Platini said that the preparations for the championship were a real challenge for the president of Ukraine, and he had accepted it.

"This was not easy, but everything will go smoothly," the UEFA president said.

Yanukovych and Platini cut a symbolic ribbon and unveiled a bust of King Danylo Halytsky, after whom the airport is named.

The sides will hold negotiations on the preparations for the championship following the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the terminal.
