Petro Poroshenko congratulates Ukrainians on Independence Day

Petro Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians on Independence Day and emphasized that the future of Ukraine lies in the EU and NATO.

"33 years since the restoration of Independence. Pessimists will remember the crucifixion of Christ at this age. Optimists will emphasize the resurrection," Poroshenko wrote on social networks.

"The act of declaring Independence caught many of us by surprise. For a long time, August 24 was just a day off for most, and not everyone understood the value of Independence. Now this day has become one of the biggest holidays. If you draw analogies with religious ones, it is Christmas and Easter at the same time," Poroshenko writes.

"Only in recent years have we realized what a high price we are paying for Independence. And the stakes are only growing, and it is even scary to imagine how many more difficult challenges lay ahead. But what we have won is that Ukraine, even if it is blacked out, exhausted and bloodless, but it defended its independence and did not allow the Moscow Kremlin to erase us from the map of the world. It is clear that these plans will not come true. All of us who are alive are responsible for Ukraine to those who died for it. Therefore, right now, holding a weapon in one hand, we must lay the foundations of a new Ukraine with the other - our Army, our Language, our Faith, our future in the EU and NATO," Petro Poroshenko emphasizes.
