Rakuten plans to open additional office in Kyiv in 2024, join Diia.City

The Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten announced plans in 2024 to join the Ukrainian initiative Diia.City to develop the country's IT sector and open an additional office in Kyiv.

"Rakuten's plans for a presence in Ukraine include additional hiring in the technology sector and the appointment of a regional manager," the company said in a statement on Monday.

As Rakuten clarified for Interfax-Ukraine, joining Diia.City is in the near future - the company plans to submit an application this spring.

It is indicated that one of the next steps will be the launch of the Rakuten Viber digital wallet service in Ukraine after its successful implementation in several European countries: new financial services will be available to users, including the ability to send money to and from the country using instant transactions.

Rakuten also announced plans to open an additional office in Kyiv.

"The new Kyiv office will allow the local team to work together, more effectively develop technology products and services for users around the world, strengthening Ukraine's reputation as a center of IT innovation," the release notes.

It is clarified that three Rakuten development and marketing companies - Rakuten Viber, Rakuten Advertising and Rakuten Rewards - are now operating in Kyiv and Odesa.
