Government ups cost first stage of Vector facility due to tougher safety requirements

The Ukrainian cabinet has increased the estimated cost of a the first stage of the Vector facility for the removal, transportation, processing and storage of nuclear waste generated during the decommissioning of Chornobyl nuclear power plant, to UAH 292.834 million.

The decision is stipulated in cabinet resolution No. 949-r of October 5, 2011.

"This is the expected cost of the facility. Design and research will be carried out to revise the design [its cost is UAH 2.6 million), then a state study will be conducted, and then the final figure can be announced," the head of the overhaul, said the head of the property management and state procurement department at the State Agency for Managing the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, Anatoliy Lazarenko.

He said that the UAH 293 million includes the cost of work that has already been done and that yet to be carried out.

"Over the years of the construction of the Vector facility, safety and sanitary requirements have changed. Now work costing some UAH 90 million has to be conducted so that the facility is in line with the requirements," he said.

It is expected that after the state study, the construction of the Vector facility will be resumed.
