Russia will sign a gas transit contract with Ukraine if it implements EU legislation by the end of the year, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said at Russian Energy Week.

If not, "which is quite likely," Russia is prepared to extend the current transit contract.

However, transit via Ukraine should be economically viable, Putin said.
